Affordable Housing in Campden

A Need for Local Housing

A Need for Local Housing

If a town of Campden’s size is not to go the way of many of our villages in rural areas, then there needs to be more of a commitment for providing local housing for young people. The only way that this can be achieved is for Campden to give up some of it’s precious an yes beautiful surrounding countryside to allow the development of affordable housing which should be specifically built for young people only. Yes, this will reduce some of our beautiful surroundings, however I believe that what makes Campden such a wonderful place is that at the moment we still has a wonderful local community spirit and in order to maintain this we will need to sacrifice some of it’s natural beauty.

And what happens when the young people in the affordable housing get old? Do we take more of the surrounding area for the next generations? Do they have to sell it on to more ‘young’ people at a proportionately lower  prices, as it was when they bought it. No, I wouldn’t think so – it will add to the size of the town with only benefit for 1 generation, maybe!

I agree it would add to the size of the town, and would it lose it’s appeal over time?  I look at the new houses which have been built in Campden…they don’t quite have the same appeal as the older one’s and I don’t know, maybe I am being snobby, but some of them just dont seem to fit into the character of the town, especially as you approach from Shipston…i can’t put my finger on it exactly.  Perhaps some trees either side would change that.
In terms of Campden’s future we will need to nurture the youth – having said that there are some young locals who do not deserve to live in a place so beautiful as Campden and don’t appreciate their surroundings at all!  It’s a real shame.  Those that do appreciate the area and want to make a difference and keep Campden the ‘jewel of the Cotswolds’, we should do everything we can to keep them here as those are the people that will keep Campden thriving and if that means building housing then well, so be it!  So often these days you need to be pregnant to get noticed and then scrounge off the Governement…i know that shouldn’t be said but they are often given preferential treatment!  Anyway I best stop my rant.
